Centering Words
Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy.
Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.
Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy.
—St. Augustine

Call To Worship
Today we feel the wind beneath our wings.
Today  the hidden fountain flows and plays.
Today the church draws breath at last and sings.
As every flame becomes a Tongue of praise.
This is the feast of fire, air, and water.
Poured out and breathed and kindled into earth.
The earth herself awakens to her maker.
And is translated out of death to birth.
The right words come today in their right order.
And every word spells freedom and release.
Today the gospel crosses every border.
All tongues are loosened by the Sovereign of Peace.
Today the lost are found in the Spirit's translation.
Whose mother-tongue is Love, in every nation.

Prayer For Worship
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known,
and from you no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts
of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we
may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy Name.
Both here in this time of worship and in all the days of our
life, forevermore. Amen.

The Gloria
Glory be to the Creator
and to the Redeeming God of love.
In the Spirit here now with us,
God's mercy and compassion
Inspire our passion for justice and peace.
—adapted by GLakeDylan

Prayer For the Day
Gracious God, Living, Eternal Spirit,
we thank you that you seek us in tender loving care, lest any be lost.
Help us, in the same way, to reach out toward those who may feel alienated or excluded
from the Christian community.
Send your Spirit upon us that when we speak the word of your love,
people may hear and understand in their own language as on that Pentecost day so long ago;
for we pray in your blessed Name. Amen.
—Ruth C. Duck (adapted)

The Trisagion
Holy, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One:
embrace our brokenness and make us whole.
Holy, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One:
embody our desire for wellness and heal us.
Holy, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One:
bring all your people together as one.
—adapted by GLakeDylan

Scripture—Genesis 11
1 Throughout the earth, people spoke the same language and used the same words.
2 Now, as they moved eastward, they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.
3 They all said to one another, “Let us make bricks and bake them in the fire.” They used bricks as building stones, and bitumen for mortar.
4 Then they said, “Let us build ourselves a city, and a tower† whose top can reach to heaven. Let us make a name for ourselves, to keep us from being scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
5 God Most High came down to see the city and the tower these mortals had built.
6 “They are a single people with a single language,” God said. “And this is but the beginning of their undertakings! Now there will be nothing too hard for them to do.
7 Come, let us go down and baffle their language so that they can no longer understand one another.”
8 So God scattered them over the face of the earth, and they had to stop building the city.
9 It was named Babel, because God Most High made humans babble different languages throughout the world. It was from there that YHWH scattered them over the whole earth.

Psalmody—Psalm 104
1 Bless YHWH, my soul!
YHWH, my God, how great you are!
clothed in majesty and glory,
2 wrapped in a robe of light,
you stretch the heavens out like a tent.
3 You lay the beams for your palace on the waters
above;
you use the clouds as your chariot
and ride on the wings of the wind;
4 you use the winds as messengers
and fiery flames as attendants.
5 You fixed the earth on its foundations
so it can never totter,
6 and wrapped it with the Deep as with a robe,
the waters overtopping the mountains.
24 YHWH, what variety you have created,
arranging everything so wisely!
the earth is filled with your creativity!
25 there’s the vast expanse of the sea,
teeming with countless creatures,
living things large and small,
26 with the ships going to and fro
and Leviathan whom you made to frolic there.
27 All creatures depend on you
to feed them at the proper time.
28 Give it to them—they gather it up.
open your hand—they are well satisfied.
29 Hide your face—they are terrified.
take away their breath—they die and return to dust.
30 send back your breath—fresh life begins
and you renew the face of the earth.
31 Glory forever to YHWH!
May you find joy in your creation!
32 You glance at the earth and it trembles;
you touch the mountains and they smoke!
33 I will sing to you all my life,
I will make music for my God as long as I live.
34 May these reflections of mine give God
as much pleasure as God gives me!
—Priests for Equality. The Inclusive Bible. Sheed & Ward.

Scripture—Acts 2
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they all met in one room.
2 Suddenly they heard what sounded like a violent, rushing wind from heaven;
the noise filled the entire house in which they were sitting.
3 Something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire;
these separated and came to rest on the head of each one.
4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages
as she enabled them.
5 Now there were devout people living in Jerusalem from every nation under heaven,
6 and at this sound they all assembled.
But they were bewildered to hear their native languages being spoken.
7 They were amazed and astonished:
“Surely all of these people speaking are Galileans!
8 How does it happen that each of us hears these words in our native tongue?
9 We are Parthians, Medes and Elamites, people from Mesopotamia,
Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene,
as well as visitors from Rome—
11 all Jews, or converts to Judaism—Cretans and Arabs, too;
we hear them preaching, each in our own language, about the marvels of God!”
12 All were amazed and disturbed. They asked each other,
“What does this mean?”
13 But others said mockingly, “They’ve drunk too much new wine.”
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven and addressed the crowd:
“Women and men of Judea, and all you who live in Jerusalem!
Listen to what I have to say!
15 These people are not drunk as you think—
it’s only nine o’clock in the morning!
16 No, it’s what Joel the prophet spoke of:
17 ‘In the days to come—
it is our God who speaks—
I will pour out my Spirit
on all humankind.
Your daughters and sons will prophesy,
your young people will see visions,
and your elders will dream dreams.
18 Even on the most insignificant of my people,
both women and men,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19 And I will display wonders
in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below:
blood, fire and billowing smoke.
20 The sun will be turned into darkness
and the moon will become blood
before the coming of the
great and sublime day of our God.
21 And all who call upon the name
of our God will be saved.’"

Prayer Of Intercession
Holy God, in your Spirit of love, let not our hearts be troubled,
and do not let them be afraid.
You are with us, and in us; thus we pray:
Come, Spirit of Truth: come, Holy Spirit.
Holy God, by your Spirit you gave birth to your Church:
may all people, regardless of religion and belief,
be your Church in this world.
Lead us by your Holy Spirit in the ways of truth and love.
Come, Spirit of Truth: Come, Holy Spirit.
Holy God, you gave your disciples the ability to speak in the languages of the people:
may we also speak about your deeds of power throughout the world,
that all may know of your salvation.
Come, Spirit of Truth: Come, Holy Spirit.
Holy God, the earth is full of your creatures:
may all who look to you be given food in due season.
Open your hand in desolate places and fill the hungry with good things.
Come, Spirit of Truth: Come, Holy Spirit.
Holy God, you poured out your Holy Spirit in your holy city Jerusalem:
pour out your Spirit in our own city.
Raise up prophets and dreamers; give us vision.
Come, Spirit of Truth: Come, Holy Spirit.
Holy God, you give the gift of healing by your Spirit:
bring healing and wholeness to all those on our hearts and minds this day.
In your might and mercy, renew the face of the earth;
bring renewal to those in need.
Come, Spirit of Truth: Come, Holy Spirit.
Holy God, you adopt us as your children, joint heirs with your Christ.
In your mercy, keep us and love us.
May we, and all who have entered into your joy,
rest in your presence forever.
Come, Spirit of Truth: Come, Holy Spirit.

The Prayer of Jesus
Our Parenting God
who dwells in the mystery of heaven.
Most holy is your Name.
Your realm is coming, here on earth
as it is in heaven.
Grant us the portion we need this day,
may each of us have enough.
Forgive us our wrongdoings
as we forgive those who have wronged us.
For yours in the Kin-Dom, the power,
and the glory, forevermore.
—GLakeDylan

Prayer of Thanksgiving
Flame of calling voice
who alighted on—but did not consume—
the tree beheld by Moses:
Awaken us to know the holy ground upon which we live.
Flame of exodus journey
guiding bright throughout the night—
light upon the pathway:
Open our hearts and minds to know the way
to follow your Beloved and Only Begotten One.
Flame of prophetic witness
bringing forth your Word and
receiving your servant Elijah—
in flame of affirmation and transformation:
Set our hearts on fire to share your way
in this world of your creating and redeeming.
Flame of holy wisdom
speaking life into being and being into life—
inspiring psalms of praise and thanksgiving:
Lift our voices to sing your praise and to
worship your glory.
Flame of hope in even the bleakest of times—
whom Ezekiel knew as barren, parched death
resurrected to new life:
Revive us, O God, revive us again.
Flame of promise breathed forth from your
Messiah, Jesus, upon his followers—
comforting advocate:
Fall afresh on each of us.
Flame of cloven tongues,
mighty wind of opening doors
and opening hearts:
inspire such a new birth
within us and in the ministry we share.
Flame of Tongues—
sharing the language of love
that all may hear and know
your presence of uniting love:
may our hearts and minds be aflame
striving to do your will and to be
a people of justice and peace.
Blessed are You and blessed is your Kin-Dom,
now and forevermore. Amen.

Dismissal With Blessing
Holy One,
For all of the ways you speak to us –
in rushing wind,
in dancing flames,
in words we understand,
and in all that transcends language,
we give thanks.
Give us the courage to speak your love,
everywhere we go,
to everyone we meet.
Amen.

A BEAD AND A PRAYER

PENTECOST

CROSS

Like a mighty wind;

the Spirit of God is with us.

Like a burning flame;

the Spirit of God is with us.

Like a word that recreates and reconciles;

the Spirit of God is with us.

Like a love that is for all, no one left behind;

the Spirit of God is with us.

INVITATORY

Spirit of God, Holy Presence, Almighty One who is a Comfort and Advocate, empower us to worship you and to be opened to your movement in our life. For we yearn to be a people of God who follow in your Wisdom, making a world of justice and peace. Amen

CRUCIFORM

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy.

—St Augustine. The Ancient Faith Prayer Book (p. 116). Ancient Faith Press]

WEEK 1

After that, I will pour out my Spirit on all humankind. And, all means all.

Your daughters and sons will prophesy, your elders will have prophetic dreams, and your young people will see visions.

In those days, I will pour out my Spirit even on those in servitude, women and men alike without exception.

I will show signs in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and pillars of smoke—the sun will be turned to darkness,

and the moon to blood—at the coming of the great and terrible Day of God Most High..

But everyone who calls on the name of the Holy, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One will be redeemed and reconciled.

For there will be a remnant on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem—this is God's promise.

Anyone who invokes the name of God Most High will be among that remnant.

WEEK 4

"When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from God Most High, the Spirit of truth who comes from God, she will bear witness on my behalf. You too must bear witness, for you’ve been with me from the beginning.

I have told you all this to keep your faith from being shaken. But I have told you these things so that when the time comes, you’ll remember that I told you ahead of time.

"I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send her to you.

And when she comes, she will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to God Most High and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

"I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, she will guide you into all the truth; for she will not speak on her own, but will speak whatever she hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

She will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Holy, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One has is mine. For this reason I said that she will take what is mine and declare it to you.

INVITATORY Holy Spirit, come into us as a cleansing fire. Purify our hearts from the blemishes of this world: the desires for wealth and notoriety, the consuming of vital resources, the lust for power. Burn in us so that we might live into the ways of the Spirit: love and kindness, mercy and peace—ways that live for others and not only for ourselves. Holy Spirit, dwell in us, burn brightly in us, and help us to shine Your way into the world. Amen.

CROSS Now, go out into the world in peace. Have courage. Hold on to what is good. Repay no one evil for evil. Strengthen the faint-hearted. Support the weak. Help the suffering. Honor all people. Love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. And, may the grace, love and communion of God be with you; always and forever. Amen.

THEME

In a world where violence seems to rule, we commit, O God, to small random acts of peace making. Where people are oppressed because they look, act, speak, think or love differently we will affirm their freedom. Where people are exploited because they lack the strength or resources to refuse, we will seek to create alternatives. Where people are controlled through threat and fear, we will offer safety and hope. Where people believe their violence and power give them the right and ability to act as they please we will call them to account. Wherever violence is done to another, through physical force, manipulation of truth, or the subtle workings of power, we will opt out, we will speak out, and we will stand out in opposition, through small, random acts of peace making.

ABOUT ME

As a clergyperson I am an ordained elder (i.e., presbyter, priest, pastor) in the United Methodist Church, now retired as of 07/01/2020. My ministry of preaching began in 1978 as a certified lay speaker. I continued my education, following 3 years of course work at Penn State University in 1972-1975, completing my BA in both Psychology and Religion in 1985 (with honors) at Lebanon Valley College (Annville, PA). I then began my seminary studies at Duke University Divinity School (Durham NC), transferring after my second year to The Theological School, Drew University (Madison NJ) where I graduated magna cum laude with a MDiv degree in 1990. All the while serving churches as a Licensed Local Student Pastor, my first appointment beginning in April 1982. Ordained as a Deacon in 1989 and an Elder in 1991, I have served congregations in rural, small town, and suburban communities. My ministry has always focused on personal and community spiritual growth and wellness, ecumenical relations, the art of preaching, liturgical and sacramental theology and praxis, systems theory and conflict management, and ministry with persons of disability. I am a member of the Psi Chi academic honors fraternity. I am married to a wonderful woman, Mary, who is an ordained pastor in The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1981, and has served congregations in that denomination, the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), and the United Church of Christ through their covenant relation program. She also has provided pulpit supply in the United Methodist Church. We and our four fur-kids—Dollie Jayne, Bichon and Maggie Lynne, Shih Tzu—[sadly, Mollie Mae crossed the rainbow bridge in October 2020, and Webster Andrew follow in April 2022] enjoy life being involved in various spiritual and community endeavors. I am an advocate for people with disabilities and focus my current study on God and Disability, along with, a Theology From A Context Of Disability. I am also an advocate for equal rights, feminism, womanism, Black Lives Matter, LGBTQAI+ inclusion. As a pacifist, I have always tried to live following in the pathway of Jesus, seeking just peace and economic reform. In a world of billionaires there is no excuse for poverty. In community as it is understood according to the biblical mandate, there must be equal access to all resources and benefits of life. My hobbies include Model Railroading, Reading, Writing, Photography and Music. I share this blog with the hope that something here will inspire the liturgy and worship that you share with your community or in your own journey.

WHY A BLOG?

As a clergyperson with a disability now retired, this is my humble attempt to provide a ministry that some will find helpful. I have always focused on be inclusive and have struggled with the church's tradition of referring to God and humankind with masculine names and pronouns. Since the 1970's, thanks to my dear sister-in-law, I have been aware of the discrimination of women and have worked in the parish and community for equal rights with an equity of access to the resources that add blessing to life. I hope this site is of meaning to those who read it and worship with me and others within it. Peace.
